In Vitro Cosmetic Safety Testing

At Orivida Research, we offer in vitro safety testing services to help cosmetic and personal care brands evaluate the potential for irritation in their formulations without animal testing. Using reconstructed human tissue models and internationally recognized OECD test guidelines, these studies provide scientific data to support product safety assessments and regulatory requirements.

EpiOcular™ Eye Irritation Test (EIT) – OECD 492

The EpiOcular™ Eye Irritation Test uses a reconstructed human cornea-like epithelium (RhCE) model to evaluate the potential of chemicals and formulations to cause eye irritation. This alternative to traditional animal testing assesses tissue viability following exposure to a test material.

The study follows OECD Test Guideline 492 and helps distinguish materials that do not require classification for eye irritation or serious eye damage under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) from those that may require classification.

EpiDerm™ Skin Irritation Test (SIT) – OECD 439

The EpiDerm™ Skin Irritation Test uses a three-dimensional reconstructed human epidermis (RhE) model to evaluate the skin irritation potential of chemicals and cosmetic formulations. The method measures tissue viability following exposure to determine whether a test material is classified as an irritant or non-irritant.

The study follows OECD Test Guideline 439 and supports differentiation between GHS Category 2 skin irritants and materials that do not require classification for skin irritation

Purpose of In Vitro Testing

In vitro testing provides scientific data to evaluate the skin and eye irritation potential of cosmetic formulations. These studies are intended for product safety and liability assessments rather than consumer-facing cosmetic claim substantiation.
